FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE

As an independent school, Canterbury is dedicated to the principle that qualified students should be able to attend the school regardless of their ability to pay. Canterbury sets aside a pool of funds to provide grants up to 90% of tuition and fees per child. These grants are awarded based on need. For the 2011-2012 school year, we awarded $801,283 to 30% of the student body.

ENDOWMENT

  • $4,300,000 as of June 30, 2010

PHILANTHROPY

Canterbury depends on gifts to the Annual Fund to help bridge the gap between tuition income and the actual cost of a Canterbury education. Contributions help supplement the school’s budget, providing roughly 10% of the annual operating fund. Canterbury is focused on completing the school’s campus master plan and enhancing the educational program. Canterbury has engaged in three successful capital campaigns that have raised nearly $24,000,000.

CURRICULUM

The curriculum seeks to develop essential skills within a whole-child philosophy. It includes reading and language arts, mathematics, science, social studies, foreign languages, art, music, computer, physical education, study skills, health, outdoor education, and spiritual development.

SPIRITUAL LIFE

Chapel is held three times per week. Worship is rooted in the Episcopal tradition but seeks to respect the faith perspectives of all religions. We encourage spiritual exploration through the use of the Old and New Testaments, literature, and other resources. A key component of this curriculum is our Service Learning program for all students. Individual pastoral care is available upon request.

LIBRARY/TECHNOLOGY

The library has over 17,000 volumes, and 8 computer workstations. On campus there are 67 mobile laptop computers for student use in addition to 33 computers located in the lab. Each full-time faculty member has a laptop computer. Every classroom has a SMARTBoard (interactive whiteboard). Twenty-three laptop computers on a mobile cart are in the Stafford Arts Center.

Venture Out

The Venture Out program demonstrates that vital learning can take place outside the traditional classroom.   Canterbury is the only independent school in Greensboro with a high and low ropes course, a climbing wall, a pond for water activities, and a nature and fitness trail.  With the help of certified outdoor educators, K-8 students use these program elements to learn more about skill sets such as cooperation, collaboration, listening, self-awareness, and goal setting.

ATHLETICS

Canterbury offers students in grades five through eight the opportunity to choose from eight seasonal sports team opportunities: soccer, lacrosse, cross country, golf, tennis, swimming, volleyball, and basketball. Canterbury holds membership in the Triad Middle Athletic Conference (TMAC). The school also offers students a wide range of after school club opportunities including arts and intramural sports, drama, science explorations, and the Battle of the Books reading squad.

HONOR CODE

Canterbury strives to develop self-discipline and self-confidence in every student. School-wide rules, guided by the school’s Behavior Expectation Policy, are simple. Students are rewarded for positive behavior. Middle school students adhere to an Honor Code that focuses on personal and academic integrity. Disciplinary action, when necessary, is administered in a fair, uniform, and consistent manner.

DRESS CODE

Consistent with the mission statement of Canterbury, our dress code policy seeks to provide students with a valuable feeling of equality. The dress code is based on a great deal of thoughtful consideration by faculty, parents, administrators, and the Board of Trustees. It requires that children dress in clothes that are similar, thus avoiding competition among students to wear the “latest” in clothing. We expect students to arrive each day dressed in the Canterbury dress code

HOURS

Students arrive between 7:45 am and 8:00 am each day and are dismissed at 3:15 pm. For families who require extended hours, the school offers early morning drop-off beginning at 7:30 am and an extended day program (for which there is an additional charge) until 6:00 pm. Many students choose to take advantage of after school athletic opportunities, clubs, and arts classes, all of which are scheduled following the end of the school day.

ACCREDITATION

Canterbury is accredited by the Southern Association of Independent Schools (SAIS) and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). The school is a member of the National Association of Episcopal Schools (NAES), the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS), the North Carolina Association of Independent Schools (NCAIS), as well as other educational and professional organizations.
