Alumni NewsJessica Fuller, Canterbury Class of 1996, writes "You and Your Kids are Lucky to Be at Canterbury." September 4, 2007 Dear Parents, Every Sunday morning, when the pace of life slows down, I eagerly anticipate a weekly ritual: sitting with the News and Record and enjoying two cups of freshly brewed coffee before a special breakfast with my husband, Mark. This past Sunday, I settled in, eventually turning to the Life section of the paper, where a picture of a bride in Celebrations caught my eye. The wedding announcement, of course, told details of the wedding party, the family, the dress… all the usual things. It also told of the bride’s many accomplishments: graduate of Salem Academy, Phi Beta Kappa, Highest Honors and Highest Distinction from UNC-CH, National Merit Scholar, Chancellor’s Taylor-Williams Carolina Scholar, Janet and Newton Fischer Scholar in Voice, recipient of the Edward Kidder Graham Outstanding Senior Award. Wow. The girl in the picture was Sarah Taylor, a member of Canterbury’s first graduating class. Sarah’s successful record reminded me of questions I hear from parents who worry about life after Canterbury. Because our school only goes through the eighth grade, parents want to be reassured that the sacrifice they make to send their child to Canterbury is worth it. After Canterbury, will their children be ready for the next level? Will they go on to find success? After fourteen years, Canterbury’s track record for preparing students for the next level is quite clear. While not all alums are as successful as Sarah, our graduates go on to do exceptionally well in academics and in so many other ways. Please don’t just take my word for it, though. Look at the attached document, Our Alumni are Awesome, which lists awards received by our 9th-12th grade graduates this past spring and summer. On it you will see an impressive list of achievements at area independent schools, boarding schools, and local public schools. You will see that our graduates earned recognition for academics, citizenship, the arts, and athletics. You will see that they earned impressive leadership roles. This past year, Michael Betts, ‘02, was elected president of the senior class at Grimsley, and Krissy Dull, ’04, was the Student Body President at Bishop McGuinness. Julie Lucas, ’02, was valedictorian of Page High School. (Amazingly enough, Page’s valedictorian the year before, Catherine Newman, graduated from Canterbury in 2001, and the valedictorian the year before that, Sarah Lupton, attended Canterbury from K-7th grade.) I would say we have a pretty strong track record, indeed! As you experienced our first week of school – and it was a great first week of school – I hope you recognized the gift you are giving to your child: A school that begins on the very first day where it should begin – in chapel, where we celebrated the gifts of a new year and of the community in which we are blessed to be a part. A school that has outstanding teachers who love and care for every single child. A school that provides academic challenge while fostering a love of learning. A school with a special spirit and a commitment to reach out in service to others. A school that will prepare your child for the next level. A school that will prepare your child for life. Thanks for your continued support. See you at Back to School Night!
