A Message to Canterbury Students from the Interim Head of School (8/31/2007)

Dear Parents,

A little more than nine months ago, you received a letter from our board president, Ed Winslow, telling you about a leadership change at the school. Since the news was sudden, I imagine you found it to be unsettling, and it may have caused you to question the strength of Canterbury.

In spite of what you might have felt at the time, you rallied around the teachers and the staff to let us know you had faith in the school and the future. You expressed confidence in Canterbury through your words and your actions; you supported our school in countless ways, early on and throughout the year. For that faith and support, we are very, very grateful. Look at where it has brought us!

We are successfully concluding another school year. We look forward to a strong returning staff and an amazing community of students and parents. We eagerly anticipate the arrival of our new leader, Burns Jones, who we know will take this school into its next successful chapter.

When you return next fall, you can expect to see the shell of the Fine Arts Center. You will find a paved parking lot, and a wonderful new field. The things you can look forward to the most, however, have nothing to do with bricks and mortar, or pavement and grass. In August, you can look forward once again to joining a strong school community, ready to continue its work of teaching young people to learn, to love, to serve, and to live.

Thanks again for everything. Have a wonderful, restful summer.

Sincerely yours,

Penny Summers
Interim Head of School
