UP, UP and AWAY
Our dedicated and talented faculty is second only to the children in making Canterbury School the special place it is. With this in mind, Canterbury established an important tradition that celebrates teachers and their long-term service to Canterbury. Faculty members who reach their tenth anniversary are surprised at a Friday chapel with a unique celebration, and then receive a send-off to a mystery location. Jackie Fuller, kindergarten assistant to Sandy Parker, was celebrated for her enthusiastic ten years of service on Friday, November 30. The following morning, at 6:30am, Jackie was sent up and away in a hot air balloon. Her balloon left from Canterbury School where more than one hundred well wishers sent her off into the sunrise. Pictured here, Jackie's biggest fans -- teachers, students, parents and friends.

Nicaragua Mission Trip
Classroom service learning projects rarely have the opportunity to carry forward from year to year. However, on Wednesday, October 24 fifth grade students had the chance to bridge the years when Former Canterbury Board President, Mike Twilley, came to their classroom to share photos, stories, and thanks to the class for their efforts to support children in a small town in Nicaragua. Last year students raised money for this mission trip by selling crafts and jewelry. Proceeds went to purchase shoes for children in this Central American village that Mike and a group of Greensboro residents helped deliver this summer. Students quickly learned that in this part of the world shoes were a luxury and school a privilege.

No School
With the day off a handful of 2007 alumnae return to campus to participate in chapel.

JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes
Each year, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation sponsors a walk to raise awareness of diabetes and to support research to find a cure.  On Saturday, September 29th, over 2,000 walkers joined together at Grimsley High School in Greensboro to participate in the Walk for a Cure. Canterbury School currently has two students with Type 1 Diabetes.  In support of these children and their families, Canterbury has helped organize a walking team aptly named Chandler’s Champions and Hutton’s Heroes.  This year’s team attracted over 200 walkers and raised over $15,000 for this worthy cause!

Board Adds Four New Members

The Board welcomed new trustees during their fall retreat. Pictured above are: David Brown, Joyce Johnston - CPA President, Martha Anne DuBose - CPA President- Elect, Linnie Foster, and Ed Winslow - Board President.

Canterbury School elected four new members to the School’s Board of Trustees in the spring of 2007.  New trustees are Jim H. Bennett, P. David Brown, Sr., Martha Anne DuBose, and Isaiah O. Ugboro.  Jim Bennett, a current parent, is the Vice-chair of the school’s third capital campaign, and has successfully Co-chaired the School’s Annual Fund campaign, exceeding both financial and participation goals.  Jim is President and Partner of Atlas Lighting Products based in Burlington, NC.

P. David Brown has been a strong fixture in Canterbury’s history, particularly in the founding years.  David is a former member of Greensboro’s City Council and is the owner of the Gate City Motor Company headquartered in downtown Greensboro.  David’s board and civic experience is extensive.  David served a three-year board term at Saint Mary’s College in Raleigh, was the Past Chairman of Moses Cone Health System, and the Former President of the Greensboro Area Chamber of Commerce.

Martha Anne DuBose, the rising president of the Canterbury Parents’ Association, is a current parent, who successfully led Canterbury School’s Annual Fund campaign in 2004-2005 with her husband, Blaine.  Martha Anne also chaired Holy Trinity’s Every Member Canvas annual effort the following year.

Linnie Foster is a returning member of the Board. Linnie previously served a three-year term on the Canterbury Board in the school’s founding years from 1993-1997. She has a degree in education from North Carolina A&T University and has had a successful career as a teacher and educator in local public schools. Linnie is an active and enthusiastic Episcopalian lay worker.

Dr. Isaiah Ugboro, a current parent, is a well respected Business Professor at NC A &T State University’s School of Business and Economics.  Isaiah has over 22 years of college teaching and research experience in areas of Strategic Planning/Management, Organization Structural Design, Strategic Human Resource Planning, Organizational Performance/Effectiveness and Strategic Market Planning.  In addition, Dr. Ugboro is a member of several regional and national professional organizations.

Collectively and individually this new slate of Board members is a highly capable group.

Team Canterbury Rides Again
Established by former student, Krissy Dull '04, Team Canterbury raised more than $25,000 for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society in the Tour to Tanglewood, a two-day ninety-mile bike ride held September 15th and 16th. It was the sixth year for the Team, which was made up of forty-two riders - students, alumni, parents, faculty, and loyal supporters. Canterbury also sponsored a rest stop along the bike race, offering refreshments to those riding in the event.
