A donation was made to the Barnabas Network on behalf of Rosalyn Orr. Ashley shared thank you notes.
Head of School Report- Burns Jones
Burns thanked the CPA members for their work on behalf of Canterbury School.
The Annual Fund kicked off at BTS Night. Burns asked CPA to take the appeal very seriously as we can’t rely on previously budgeted items that have been cut.
Advancement Office is aware that parents are feeling “nickled and dimed” with various fundraisers that our community supports. The Advancement office is working on it and asking parents to please make them aware of charitable activities so that we aren’t inundating our parents with simultaneous requests.
Math Department is meeting about a possible new curriculum.
Advancement Report- Kathleen Smith and Mary Winstead
Kathleen announced the formation of a new Advancement Committee. The committee is chaired by David Brown and includes Andy Lee, Jim Bennett, Joe Stanley, Pat Palmer, Jim Brady, Aurelia Stafford, Whit Edwards, Susan Williams and the Advancement Team. This committee will begin prospecting for good volunteers and donors.
Kathleen announced that the Canterbury Tales will be coming out twice yearly instead of three times per year.
Equipment has been purchased to enhance the Applied Science curriculum, led by John Schoultz.
Mary Winstead reported that Fleming and Whit Edwards are chairing the Annual Fund this year. The AF Committee is asking donors to consider an increase in their pledges from last year. This has been positively received at BTS Nights.
Mary also announced that the new bumper stickers are here!
Committee Reports-
Altar Guild- This committee is in charge of special chapel services and the annual poinsettia sale and holiday chapel decorations.
Auction- The date for the auction is Friday, March 19. The committee set the date around the NCAA basketball schedule and Spring Break. The theme is still being considered but thinking of a playground theme if the initiative passes.
Shepherds Committee- The purpose of this committee is to welcome new families and to work with the Host Families to help new families get acclimated.
Book Fair- The dates for Book Fair are Nov. 16-20 with set up happening on Nov. 13.
Care Committee- Please let Daniela Helms or her committee know of any cares or concerns within the Canterbury community.
Classroom Coordinators- Lower School had a successful volunteer sign up at BTS Night and the Middle School is looking forward to the same. If CPA needs to coordinate volunteer efforts during the year, please contact Brooke Monaghan or Susan Moffitt.
Clerical- Holly Albright reported that this new committee has been formed to help Betsy in the office with any clerical needs that she may have.
Community Dinners- Events planned for Jan 21 and April 22, both at 6pm. Stay tuned for more details.
Cookbook- Wendy Riley reported that the Cookbook committee decided to push back production and focus on getting more recipes and good content. She asked us to please submit more recipes and treated the CPA to apple cinnamon muffins.
Fall Social- Stephanie Farabow and Julia Robinson are chairing this fun, parent’s only party on Friday, Oct. 16. The theme is a Low Country Boil and they are looking for volunteers.
Green Committee- This committee is working on more ideas and will be including “green tips” in the Parent’s Page. Some of their ideas for this year include a recycling program, Earth Hour, Greensboro Beautiful and possible participation in the Green Cup Challenge where schools compete in various “green” challenges. The committee also put in a plug for the Venture Out program.
Hospitality- Lisa Hill reported that this committee has hosted four events already and all is going well. They are gearing up for Founder’s Day on October 28th.
Hot Lunch- We are trying new vendors this year and will repeat popular choices. They are working on the inclusion of nutritional information so that parents of children with dietary concerns will have necessary information.
New Family Committee- This is a new committee led by Marianne Bennett. The members of this committee serve as an extension of the Host Families and seek to welcome new families before school starts and throughout the school year. Marianne asked CPA to let her know of volunteer needs so that our 9 new families can be invited to participate.
Parent Education- Lucy Sackett and Karen Smith are working hard to offer age-appropriate parent education this year on a broad range of topics. The theme for the year is “Parenting the Whole Child in Today’s World” and the first session will be on September 30th and will be about Parenting in an Age of Technology. The CPA needs to “talk it up” and support these great opportunities.
School Store- Many new designs and new colors are showcased in the school store this year. The committee is working on a school store website so that people can order online. Members of this committee will be selling at school events. The regular store hours are Thursday afternoons during carpool and Friday during lunch. The school store sells $1 Gatorades to the middle school students on Fridays.
Parents Page- Knox Barker and Teresa Audilet use the monthly Parents Page to spotlight works of the CPA. Please submit any news you would like included.
Passive Fundraising- Don’t forget to relink your Harris Teeter VIC cards! Remember to turn in Box Tops because Canterbury earned over $600 last year!
Planting Committee- Karen Schaede and Amy Klug work to “spruce up” flowers and plants around campus. They are looking for plants/flowers that stores can no longer sell but could be pretty with a little TLC. Please let this committee know if you know of any plant sales or if you see a planter on campus that is in need of attention.
Sally Foster- Kelly McKee and Katherine Hamilton are in charge of our Sally Foster fundraiser this year. The campaign runs through September 25 and orders are ready on October 26-27. Please remember that there is no tax on these orders. Also, you can go online for more sale items and so that out of town friends and family can order.
Skateland- Kara Wilson asked for us to be expecting sign up forms in the Chatter. Dates are TBA.
Stone Soup- The date is set for November 24th and Mr. McCollum’s class will present the play.
Teacher Appreciation- This committee hosted the Welcome Back luncheon for faculty and also celebrated faculty summer birthdays. They are working on Workday Snacks, Christmas casseroles and the Fall and Spring Teacher Appreciation Luncheons. The Fall luncheon is planned for October 22.
Booster Club- This new committee was formed to raise student awareness and support for events happening on campus. They will begin selling concessions at home basketball games and kids will make posters advertising events. Other ideas are in the works!
New Business- Kim announced the results of the Playground Initiative Vote. The initiative passed easily with 100% support!
The meeting adjourned at 8:55 AM.
Respectfully submitted by Barbara Palmer, 9/20/2009
