Officer Reports

Kim shared some thank you notes from members of the faculty who expressed their gratitude for the teacher appreciation luncheon. Green folders were distributed. Kim reported that CPA is currently at 76% participation in the Annual Fund and encouraged those who have not pledged to hurry and do so that the CPA Board can acheive 100% participation.
Ashley Simpson- Treasurer
Ashley shared another thank you note from the family of Rosalyn Orr.
Head of School Report- Burns Jones
Burns asked for feedback on the "Buzz with Burns" discussions that were held last year. Should these talks continue? One suggestion was to schedule the talks at different times of day so that every member of the Canterbury community can try to attend. Another suggestion was to schedule the talks less frequently but then choose relevant topics that would stimulate attendance. The suggestion was made for the school to look into setting up a Blog for Burns to report on relevant topics. Admissions Process- Burns explained that parent involvement is crucial. Next Open House is scheduled for November 17th.
Advancement Report- Kathleen Smith
Kathleen asked for feedback from the CPA regarding electronic announcements from the school. Are there too many/too few? The general feeling was that the community needs communication and the current frequency of the announcements was on target. Christian Fund for Ethical Living is bringing Po Bronson to Canterbury. He is the author of Nurture Shock. This will be a good follow up to Wendy Mogel. The dates are TBA. As a follow up to Greg Mortensen, Canterbury will host Zack Bonner. Zack is the 12 year old author of The Little Red Wagon, a book about Bonner's fight against youth homelessness. His visit will focus on the students. Annual Fund- tracking about $25,000.00 ahead of last year. Letters to Grandparents and Alumnae have been mailed.
Guest Speaker- Spencer Edmunds
Spencer talked about the new curriculum in the Middle School called Developmental Designs. This is a social curriculum that provides a positive culture where the students have a large investment in the development of the rules. The students developed a social contract at the beginning of the year and then each student signed the contract. The contract is posted in Armfield and reads: Canterbury Students Will: Participate, Have fun each day, Arrive Prepared, Learn to lead and lead to learn, Show respect in all situations and Adhere to the Honor Code and Dress Code. The students are held accountable for these guidelines that they set for themselves. There are 9 Advisory Groups instead of Homerooms. The groups are smaller and relationship building has been emphasized through Morning Meetings. This year, there have been far fewer disciplinary situations due to this new curriculum. The Exchange Students from Mexico spent 2 weeks in Greensboro. 8th graders can choose from the Mexico Exchange Program or a trip to Italy or Washington, DC. Athletics were opened to 6th graders this year and many have participated. Middle School Planning Committee- Formed to look at other schools and the things that they are doing well. The findings are now being prioritized and plans will be made for implementation within the next three years. New Director Search is going well. Deb McGee complimented Spencer on the wonderful job he had done as MS Director.
