Admissions Update- We have received about 80 kindergarten applications to date. This is equal to last year. Re-enrollment packets are past due and Burns explained how important it is to the budgeting process to have these re-enrollment packets turned in on time. Payment plans can be arranged for families with special circumstances. Attrition rate at Canterbury is very low. Approximately 94-96% of our families return each year.
Middle School Director- Dave Skeen has accepted the job as our new Middle School Director. Dave brings a lot of experience. He will be visiting campus in mid-March so parents will have a chance to meet him. Dave met with many teachers and faculty members as well as the Search Committee during the interview process and the vote was unanimous for his hiring. Burns explained that one of Dave's first challenges will be to develop a communication strategy to keep parents informed.

GUEST SPEAKER- JUSTIN MCCOLLUM, 3RD GRADE TEACHER AND CHAIR OF THE MATH DEPARTMENT
Justin explained that the Math Department is currently going through a curriculum review. Other schools have been polled and the results show that many different curriculums are being used. The goals for our Math Department include:
"Sense Making" Exercises, Creative Problem Solving, Computation Skills, Diversity of Thought, Optimize Learning, Consistent Approach in Grades K-8.
The Lower School began using a curriculum called "Everyday Math" and this will continue. Currently, students get 45 minutes of math per day. The goal is to increase that to 60 minutes per day which is the recommendation. More Professional Development will be implemented next year in both the Lower and Middle Schools.
The Middle School is working to prepare the students for the various math tracts at different high schools. Canterbury is investigating teaching Algebra II to gifted math students in place of geometry to prepare them for the "fast track" math programs in high school. They are also looking to offer some after school math opportunities for gifted math students.
