Program Highlights
The Early Learning program at Canterbury (PreK) is inspired by the world renowned schools of Reggio Emilia, Italy. The Reggio approach affords children opportunities to engage in meaningful, authentic learning. Skills are not taught in isolation but are imbedded within the context of long-term projects based on the children’s interests. This approach offers the teacher the opportunity to address each child’s needs, learning style, and interests. With its emphasis on the arts, outdoor learning, and collaboration, this style complements Canterbury’s existing K-8 program.
Canterbury’s program will develop all areas (social, cognitive, linguistic, physical, spiritual, and creative) that are vital to the growth of a young child. Furthermore, the program concentrates on readiness skills such as enthusiasm for learning, oral-language, listening, independence, socialization, fine-motor, and letter and number recognition to prepare children for entrance into kindergarten. This model constitutes a wonderful way to prepare students for kindergarten and beyond, either at Canterbury or elsewhere.
Canterbury’s curriculum will meet or exceed the Early Learning Standards adopted by the State of North Carolina.
